Before you take sides or jump into conclusion just from a text in Malachi, kindly read the following...
I beseech thee under God to please forget what you know or have been told before now, read with so much objectivity (not subjectivity). It’s going to be lenghty but promises to be an educative and interesting read…
1 Peter 3:15-16 KJV
But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and BE READY ALWAYS TO GIVE AN ANSWER TO EVERY MAN THAT ASKETH YOU A REASON OF THE HOPE THAT IS IN YOU with meekness and fear:
Having a good conscience; that, whereas they speak evil of you, as of evildoers, they may be ashamed that FALSELY ACCUSE YOUR GOOD CONVERSATION IN CHRIST.
The inspiration for this post would be from The Scripture (ALONE! and don’t be too lazy to read them) because it is profitable for:
Doctrine (TEACHING) Reproof (EVIDENCE) CORRECTION! Instruction (TRAINING)... In righteousness
2 Timothy 3:15-17 KJV
And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.
All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto ALL GOOD WORKS.
To better understand the concept of firstfruits and offerings (especially tithing), I would recommend that you read every available scriptures (The whole chapter preferably).
Here are very notable ones, go and read them all by yourself ‘cos this post will only point to salient point you could have missed… Leviticus 27:30-32; Numbers 18;24,26,28; Deuteronomy 12:6,11,17; **Deuteronomy 14:22,23,28; Deuteronomy 26:12; 2 Chronicles 31:5,6,12; Nehemiah 10:37,28; 12:44; 13:5,12; Amos 4:4; Malachi 3:8,10; Matthew 23:23, Luke 11:42; Luke 18:12; Hebrews 7:5,6,7,8,9
The concept of tithing features in at least 12 OT Chapters (30 verses of scripture) but mentioned in passing in just 4 NT chapters (7 verses)
- (Matthew 23:23 and Luke 11:42)
Jesus condeming the hypocrisy of the Pharisees on tithing just like he did too on the sabbaths, and other aspects of the Law of Moses.
It is very important to note that he never condemned tithing here! neither sabbath nor any other law (but their attitude) because He came to fulfill both THE LAW & THE PROPHETS.
Matthew 5:17-18 KJV
Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, BUT TO FULFIL.
For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till ALL BE FULFILLED.
- (Luke 18:12)
A Pharisee boasting of his “dead works” (performance) before God in the house of prayer (temple); claiming to fast regularly, tithe religiously etc., and even condeming a publican who later went home justified ‘cos he came without works (not full of himself; feats, status and social standing) But on God’ s mercy
Mercy: You've done something very punishable but you were pardoned! Grace: You were supposed to be suffering for what you've done but you're still enjoying what you never deserved!
- Hebrews 7:5,6,8,9
The book of Hebrew was written specifically to the Jews (People of God); Unconvinced (still practicing Judaism) and the Believer. It is a book of comparisms always comparing and constrasting the Old (obsolete) Covenant and the New (Better improved) Covenant. You will agree with me that no other book does justice to it better other than the book of Hebrew. Less of this was seen in other epistles written to the Gentiles because they were never indoctrinated into Judaism in the first place.
The concept of tithing was mentioned anyway though not as an instruction for us but in the writter explanation of the priesthood of Christ after the order of Melchisedec! (Not Aaron or Levites)
The discourse actually started in Hebrews 5, to Chapter 6 then continued in Chapter 7.
Hebrews 5:6,9-12 KJV
As he saith also in another place , Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.
 And being made perfect, he became the AUTHOR OF ETERNAL SALVATION unto all them that obey him;
Called of God an HIGH PRIEST AFTER THE ORDER OF MELCHISEDEC.
Of WHOM WE HAVE MANY THINGS TO SAY, and HARD TO BE UTTERED, seeing ye are dull of hearing.
For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat…
Hebrews 6:9,17-20 KJV
But, beloved, we are persuaded better things of you, and THINGS THAT ACCOMPANY SALVATION, though we thus speak.
Wherein God, willing more abundantly to shew unto the HEIRS OF PROMISE the IMMUTABILITY of HIS COUNSEL, confirmed it by an oath:
That by TWO IMMUTABLE THINGS, in which it was IMPOSSIBLE FOR GOD TO LIE, we might have a STRONG CONSOLATION, who have fled for refuge to LAY HOLD upon the HOPE SET BEFORE US:
 Which hope we have as an ANCHOR OF THE SOUL, both SURE and STEADFAST, and which entereth into that within the veil;
Whither the forerunner is for us entered, even JESUS, MADE AN HIGH PRIEST FOR EVER AFTER THE ORDER OF MELCHISEDEC.
Then continued in Chapter 7
Hebrews 7:1,4,11-28 KJV
 For this Melchisedec, king of Salem, priest of the most high God, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings, and blessed him;
Now consider how great this man was , unto whom even the patriarch Abraham gave THE TENTH OF THE SPOILS.
IF THEREFORE PERFECTION were by the LEVITICAL PRIESTHOOD, (for under it the people received the law,) WHAT FURTHER NEED WAS THERE THAT ANOTHER PRIEST SHOULD RISE AFTER THE ORDER OF MELCHISEDEC, and NOT BE CALLED AFTER THE ORDER OF AARON?
For THE PRIESTHOOD being CHANGED, there is made of NECCESITY A CHANGE ALSO OF THE LAW.
For he of whom these things are spoken pertaineth to another tribe, of which no man gave attendance at the altar.
For it is evident that our Lord sprang out of Juda; of which tribe Moses spake nothing concerning priesthood.
And it is yet far more evident: for that after the similitude of Melchisedec there ariseth another priest,
Who is made, not after the law of a carnal commandment, but after the power of an ENDLESS LIFE.
For he testifieth, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.
For THERE IS VERILY a DISANNULLING OF THE COMMANDMENT going before for the WEAKNESS and UNPROFITABLENESS thereof.
For THE LAW MADE NOTHING PERFECT, but THE BRINGING IN OF A BETTER HOPE DID ; by the which we draw nigh unto God.
And inasmuch as not without an oath he was made priest :
(For those priests were made without an oath; but this with an oath by him that said unto him, The Lord sware and will not repent, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec:)
By so much was JESUS MADE A SURETY OF A BETTER TESTAMENT.
And they truly were many priests, because they were not suffered to continue by reason of death:
But this man, BECAUSE HE CONTINUETH EVER, HATH AN UNCHANGEABLE PRIESTHOOD.
Wherefore HE IS ABLE also TO SAVE THEM TO THE UTTERMOST that come unto God by him, seeing HE EVER LIVETH TO MAKE INTERCESSION FOR THEM.
 For such an high priest became us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens;
WHO NEEDETH NOT DAILY, as those high priests, TO OFFER UP SACRIFICE, first for his own sins, and then for the people’s: for this HE DID ONCE, when he OFFERED UP HIMSELF.
For the law maketh men high priests which have infirmity; but the word of the oath, which was since the law, maketh the Son, who is CONSECRATED FOR EVERMORE.
GLORY TO GOD!
Now all the above Scriptures and statistics are pointers to the truth and it gives you an overview for which you could readily say emphatically: Tithing (and firstfruits) is an old covenant practice!
Should you tithe? Let us not get ahead of ourselves keep on reading… More Scriptural evidences awaits!
Remember those OT text listed earlier? Let us examine one of them together
Deuteronomy 14:22-26 (The Living Bible)
22. “You must tithe all of your CROPS every year.
23. BRING THIS TITHE TO EAT BEFORE THE LORD YOUR God AT THE PLACE HE SHALL CHOOSE AS HIS SANCTUARY; THIS APPLIES TO YOUR TITHES OF GRAIN, NEW WINE, OLIVE OIL, AND THE FIRSTBORN OF YOUR FLOCKS AND HERDS. THE PURPOSE OF TITHING IS TO TEACH YOU ALWAYS TO PUT God FIRST IN YOUR LIVES.
24. If the place the Lord chooses for his sanctuary is so far away that it isn’t convenient to carry your tithes to that place,
25. then you may SELL THE TITHE portion of YOUR CROPS AND HERDS and TAKE THE MONEY to the Lord’s sanctuary.
26. WHEN YOU ARRIVE, USE THE MONEY TO BUY AN OX, A SHEEP, SOME WINE, OR BEER, TO FEAST THERE BEFORE THE LORD YOUR GOD, AND TO REJOICE WITH YOUR HOUSEHOLD.
Now, if you’re a good Bible student (which I want you to be), then you’d notice that the tithe God asked the children of Israel to bring was tenth of their FARM PRODUCE. (NOT MONEY! THOUGH THERE WAS MONEY ALREADY IN USE)
You who own no land neither are you a farmer, you want to kill yourself on the matter of tithe?
And, you can see for yourself that Moses said they should EAT THEIR TITHE, EAT IT OH, “EAT IT” is not figurative o! Chop/eat whatever you crave! (Verse 26 check various translation)
It was the custom of exchanging your tithe/various offerings (as required by the law) for cash when the place of Worship (Jerusalem) is very far from your locality, then using the money to buy any of the listed or required items for worship, that later resorted to BUYING AND SELLING right inside THE TEMPLE
JESUS DROVE THEM OUT SAYING IT IS WRITTEN, “MY HOUSE WILL BE CALLED A HOUSE OF PRAYER!”
Mark 11:15-17 KJV
 And they COME TO JERUSALEM: and JESUS WENT INTO THE TEMPLE, and BEGAN TO CAST OUT THEM THAT SOLD AND BOUGHT IN THE TEMPLE, and OVERTHREW THE TABLES OF THE MONEYCHANGERS, and the seats of them that sold doves;
And would not suffer that any man should carry any vessel through the temple.
And he taught, saying unto them, Is it not written, MY HOUSE SHALL BE CALLED OF ALL NATIONS THE HOUSE OF PRAYER? but ye have made it a DEN OF THIEVES.
Jesus quoted from Isaiah 56:7
See John’s Gospel rendition below…
[NLT] John 2:13 It was nearly time for the Jewish Passover celebration, so Jesus went to Jerusalem.
[NLT] John 2:14 In the Temple area he saw MERCHANTS SELLING CATTLE, SHEEP, and DOVES for sacrifices; he also saw DEALERS at tables EXCHANGING FOREIGN MONEY.
[NLT] John 2:15 Jesus made a whip from some ropes and chased them all out of the Temple. He DROVE OUT the SHEEP and CATTLE, scattered the money changers’ coins over the floor, and turned over their tables.
[NLT] John 2:16 Then, going over to the people who sold doves, he told them, “Get THESE things OUT of here. STOP TURNING MY FATHER’S HOUSE INTO A MARKETPLACE!”
Same Deut 14:28-29 (TLB)
28. “Every third year you are to use your entire tithe for local welfare programs:
29. Give it to the LEVITES who have no inheritance among you, or to FOREIGNERS, or to WIDOWS and ORPHANS WITHIN YOUR CITY, so that THEY CAN EAT AND BE SATISFIED; and then Jehovah your God will bless you and your work.
Without out further explanation, you’ve seen another aspect of tithing which I’m very sure most Tithing Preacher’s will not want you to see (that’s even if they know it and perhaps they do), what baffles me is why will they want to obey (Malachi 3:10) and neglect the other (Deuteronomy 14:22-29)?
That was tithing under the Law!
Now! The very first man to Tithe in scripture is Abraham when he was still Abram.
He actually did tithe because things were not tight for him (not “so that things will not be tight” like some preacher says)
He gave tithe NOT TO BE BLESSED! HE WAS ALREADY BLESSED!
Genesis 14:8-23 NLT
Then the rebel kings of Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, Zeboiim, and Bela (also called Zoar) prepared for battle in the valley of the Dead Sea.
They fought against King Kedorlaomer of Elam, King Tidal of Goiim, King Amraphel of Babylonia, and King Arioch of Ellasar—four kings against five.
As it happened, the valley of the Dead Sea was filled with tar pits. And as the army of the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled, some fell into the tar pits, while the rest escaped into the mountains.
The victorious invaders then plundered Sodom and Gomorrah and headed for home, taking with them all the SPOILS OF WAR AND THE FOOD SUPPLIES.
They also captured LOT—ABRAM’s nephew who lived in Sodom—and carried off EVERYTHING HE OWNED.
But one of Lot’s men escaped and reported everything to ABRAM the Hebrew, who was living near the oak grove belonging to Mamre the Amorite. Mamre and his relatives, Eshcol and Aner, were Abram’s allies.
When Abram heard that his nephew Lot had been captured, HE MOBILIZED THE 318 TRAINED MEN WHO HAD BEEN BORN INTO HIS HOUSEHOLD. Then HE PURSUED Kedorlaomer’s army until HE CAUGHT UP with them at Dan.
There he divided his men and attacked during the night. Kedorlaomer’s army fled, but Abram chased them as far as Hobah, north of Damascus.
Abram RECOVERED ALL THE GOODS THAT HAD BEEN TAKEN, and he brought back his nephew Lot with his POSSESSIONS and all the women and other captives.
After Abram returned from HIS VICTORY over Kedorlaomer and all his allies, the king of Sodom went out to meet him in the valley of Shaveh (that is, the King’s Valley).
And Melchizedek, the king of Salem and a priest of God Most High, BROUGHT ABRAM SOME BREAD AND WINE.
Melchizedek blessed Abram with this blessing: “Blessed be Abram by God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth.
And blessed be God Most High, who has defeated your enemies for you.” Then Abram GAVE Melchizedek A TENTH OF ALL THE GOODS HE HAD RECOVERED.
The king of Sodom said to Abram, “Give back my people who were captured. But you may keep for yourself all the goods you have recovered.”
Abram replied to the king of Sodom, “I solemnly swear to the Lord, God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth,
that I will not take so much as a single thread or sandal thong from what belongs to you. Otherwise YOU MIGHT SAY, ‘I am the one WHO MADE ABRAM RICH.’
Do you think a poor man could have so many servants, herdsmen and even trained men?
The latter would be like the “Special Agents”, “Special forces” or “Black Ops” of our time.
Notice He had 318 of them and he mobilized them. He did not consult United Nations et al for negotiation.
Do you think it’s easy to feed at least 318 Adults?
That is no way a poor man!
Also, anywhere you see “SOW” or “SEED” in Scripture as in:
"giveth seed to the sower...", "And Isaac sowed in the land...", "they that sow in tears...", "in the morning sow thy seed and in the evening do not withold thy hand..." "seed time and harvest time..." etc...
It’s NEVER figurative nor an allegory!
The “law of sowing and reaping” simply means “planting and harvesting”!
If there’s no rain, There’s Irrigation!
If there’s pest infestation, Get pesticides and Manure (Your harvest is surer than Bet9ja)! Farming is not like stock market o!
Isaac planted, cultivated, employed more labourers, dug wells for irrigation etc and he reaped!
The biblical rich fool also planted, cultivated (possibly practiced mechanised farming) etc. and he reaped it though he never practiced generosity though!
It would be unfair and nothing but preachercraft to say and/or tie those texts to money!
Another Scriptural text twisted mostly as sowing cash to reap 30%,60% and 100% ROI is the PARABLE of the sower, The disciples asked Jesus for the meaning and he said emphatically that the seed is not money but THE WORD!
- Luke 8:11 KJV
Now the parable is this: THE SEED IS THE WORD OF GOD.
- Mark 4:13-14 KJV
And he said unto them, Know ye not this parable? and how then will ye know all parables?
 The sower soweth THE WORD.
- Matthew 13:23 KJV
But he that received SEED INTO THE GOOD GROUND is he that HEARETH THE WORD, and UNDERSTANDETH IT; which also BEARETH FRUIT, and BRINGETH FORTH, some an HUNDREDFOLD, some SIXTY, some THIRTY.
- Mark 4:8 KJV
And other fell on good ground, and did yield fruit that sprang up and increased; and brought forth, some thirty, and some sixty, and some an hundred.
Also, I read a book lately but honestly, I’m yet to unravel how a respected minister could say the 100 fold here referred to monetary reward (material prosperity). Maybe you could educate me in the comments if you know.
- Mark 10:28-30 KJV
Then Peter began to say unto him, Lo, we have LEFT ALL, and HAVE FOLLOWED THEE.
And Jesus answered and said, Verily I say unto you, There is NO MAN that hath LEFT House, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, FOR MY SAKE, and THE GOSPEL’s,
But he shall RECEIVE AN HUNDREDFOLD NOW IN THIS TIME, houses, and brethren, and sisters, and mothers, and children, and lands, WITH PERSECUTIONS; and in the world to come ETERNAL LIFE.
Reading in context, He was Never in anyway trying to teach Tithing nor sowing breakthrough seed!
For the Gospel’s sake, they would be received/welcomed in various homes (just like when he sent out the 12 disciples), their needs are catered for in those homes and would be among many beloved brethren (who must have responded to the Gospel) etc., plus oppositions to the gospel too (persecution)
NOW Malachi 3 is Christocentric, if you don’t see Christ but tithe then I’m sorry you are really lost.
Malachi 3:1-12 NIV
“I will send My MESSENGER, who will PREPARE THE WAY BEFORE ME. Then suddenly THE LORD you are seeking WILL COME TO HIS TEMPLE; messenger of THE COVENANT, whom you desire, WILL COME,” says the Lord Almighty.
But who can endure the day of his coming? Who can stand when he appears? For he will be like a refiner’s fire or a launderer’s soap.
He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver; he will purify the Levites and refine them like gold and silver. Then the Lord will have men who will bring OFFERINGS IN RIGHTEOUSNESS,
and the offerings of Judah and Jerusalem will be acceptable to the Lord, as in days gone by, as in former years…
(Matthew 11:10; Luke 1:13-17,76; John 1:6-10;19-28 All that talking about John the Baptist and him preparing the way!)
“So I will come to put you on trial. I will be quick to testify against sorcerers, adulterers and perjurers, against THOSE WHO DEFRAUD LABORERS OF THEIR WAGES, who OPPRESS THE WIDOWS and the FATHERLESS, and DEPRIVE THE FOREIGNERS among you OF JUSTICE, BUT DO NOT FEAR ME,” says the Lord Almighty.
“I the Lord do not change. So you, the descendants of Jacob, are not destroyed.
Ever since the time of your ancestors you have turned away from my decrees and have not kept them. Return to me, and I will return to you,” says the Lord Almighty. “But you ask, ‘How are we to return?’
“Will a mere mortal rob God? Yet you rob me. “But you ask, ‘How are we robbing you?’ “In tithes and offerings.
YOU ARE UNDER A CURSE—your whole nation—BECAUSE YOU ARE ROBBING ME.
Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, THAT THERE MAY BE FOOD IN MY HOUSE. Test me in this,” says the Lord Almighty, “and see if I will not THROW OPEN the FLOODGATES OF HEAVEN and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it.
I will PREVENT PESTS FROM DEVOURING YOUR CROPS, and the VINES IN YOUR FIELDS will not drop their fruit before it is ripe,” says the Lord Almighty.
“Then all the nations will call you blessed, for yours will be a DELIGHTFUL LAND,” says the Lord Almighty.
It continues… but take note that the devourer in KJV is simply pests, and it’s not consuming their salary (income) but FARM PRODUCE!
Floodgates does not mean money will start falling from the sky, it simply means rain (in season and at optimum quantity) which would facilitate increase in farm produce and harvest beyond their barns!
Also, notice God never cursed them, He only stated the obvious! If I call a spade a spade, or refer to someone crazy as crazy (It’s not exactly an insult but stating the obvious).
This alone nullify the evil notion of some preachers that you provoke/invoke “divine curse” when you refuse to pay tithe. That’s very ridiculously ridiculous.
Once you break any of the Mosaic laws and statues (About 600+) of them, you’re automatically under the curse (of the law) and when you obey all, then blessings follows too as a natural consequence. Deuteronomy 28: If thou shalt harken/obey… BLESINGS! If thou shalt not harken (disobey)… CURSES! Check out the chapter and count how many verses for blessings vs curses… It’s very scary than horror stories 😷
So for not paying tithe, they are under a curse (Devourer must come o!)
Now that explains why if you still believe in tithing and offerings as compulsory condition/requirement for God’s blessing and you are very faithful to it, it’ll work for you. But God help you that by chance you miss it, DEVOURER TI TAKE OVER NIYEN O! #OYO is your case! And even after that, YOU REMAIN UNJUSTIFIED BEFORE GOD!
Galatians 3:9-14 KJV
So then they which be of faith are blessed with faithful Abraham.[
10] For AS MANY AS ARE OF THE WORKS OF THE LAW ARE UNDER THE CURSE: for it is written, CURSED IS EVERYONE THAT CONTINUETH NOT IN ALL THE THINGS WHICH ARE WRITTEN IN THE BOOK OF THE LAW TO DO THEM. (Deuteronomy 27:26)
But that NO MAN IS JUSTIFIED BY THE LAW IN THE SIGHT OF GOD, it is evident: for, THE JUST SHALL LIVE BY FAITH. (Habakkuk 2:4)
And the law is not of faith: but, THE MAN THAT DOETH THEM SHALL LIVE IN THEM. (Leviticus 18:5)
CHRIST HATH REDEEMED US FROM THE CURSE OF THE LAW, being made a curse for us: for it is written, CURSED IS EVERY ONE THAT HANGETH ON A TREE: (Deuteronomy 21:23)
That THE BLESSING OF ABRAHAM might COME ON THE GENTILES through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the PROMISE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT through faith.
I believe that is clear enough! Tithing is not the only issue under the law, there are burnt offerings, sin offerings, sacrifices, circumcision, ceremonial washing etc. Why should one cling vehemently to Tithing alone neglecting others? Because Money is involved?
Romans 3:20-22,24,27-28 KJV
Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.
 But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets;
Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference:
Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:
Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? of works? Nay: but by the law of faith.
Therefore we conclude that A MAN IS JUSTIFIED BY FAITH WITHOUT THE DEEDS OF THE LAW.
Look at What Paul said about the custodian of the law here
Romans 10:1-10 KJV
Brethren, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for Israel is, that they might be saved.
For I bear them record that they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge.
For they being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God.
For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth.
For Moses describeth the righteousness which is of the law, That the man which doeth those things shall live by them.
But the righteousness which is of faith speaketh on this wise, Say not in thine heart, Who shall ascend into heaven? (that is, to bring Christ down from above 🙂
Or, Who shall descend into the deep? (that is, to bring up Christ again from the dead.)
 But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach;
That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
When Jesus said “It is Finished!” it simply means FULFILLED! HE FULFILLED ALL (Including every law and excluding none)!
Hence pay your tithe in compliance with other 600+ laws and statues and still be under curse of the law, or just give generously (not 10% style), willingly/cheerfully without any compulsion only to meet needs and never as a pre-requisite for God’s blessing!
2 Corinthians 9:7 KJV
Every man according as he PURPOSETH IN HIS HEART, so LET HIM GIVE; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.
2 Corinthians 9 AMPC
Let each one [give] as he has made up his own mind and purposed in his heart, not reluctantly or sorrowfully or under compulsion, for God loves (He takes pleasure in, prizes above other things, and is unwilling to abandon or to do without) a cheerful (joyous, “prompt to do it”) giver [whose heart is in his giving]. [Prov. 22:9.]
As long as there is a need in the Church or outside, give sacrificially to meet those needs like the early Church, not by 10% nor by threats of curses. Below are few examples of such giving:
- 2 Corinthians 8:1-4 KJV
 Moreover, brethren, we do you to wit of the grace of God bestowed on the churches of Macedonia;
How that in a great trial of affliction the abundance of their joy and their DEEP POVERTY ABOUNDED UNTO THE RICHES OF THEIR LIBERALITY.
 For to their power, I bear record, yea, and BEYOND THEIR POWER they were WILLING OF THEMSELVES;
Praying us with much intreaty that we would receive the gift, and take upon us the fellowship of the MINISTERING TO THE SAINTS.
- Acts 11:27-30 KJV
And in these days came prophets from Jerusalem unto Antioch.
And there stood up one of them named Agabus, and signified by the Spirit that there should be GREAT DEARTH throughout all the world: which came to pass in the days of Claudius Caesar.
Then the disciples, EVERY MAN ACCORDING TO HIS ABILITY, DETERMINED TO SEND RELIEF UNTO THE BRETHREN which dwelt in Judaea:
Which also THEY DID, and SENT IT to the elders by the hands of Barnabas and Saul.
Jesus, Paul, Peter, John, James and other apostles were not collecting tithes and special breakthrough seed offerings!
Are you a Levitical Priest? If no, why should you want to collect Tithes?
If you quote from 1 Peter 2:9 or Revelation 5:10, I don’t think it has to do with some selected sets of people, every believer is a royal priesthood. “Kings and Priests unto our God” is common to us all so it doesn’t still support nor justify Tithing
Bible recorded some notable women who met needs in Jesus’ ministry
Matthew 27:55-56 KJV
And many women were there beholding afar off, which followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering unto him:
Among which was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of Zebedee’s children.
Luke 8:1-3 KJV
And it came to pass afterward, that he went throughout every city and village, preaching and shewing the glad tidings of the kingdom of God: and the twelve were with him,
And certain women, which had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities, Mary called Magdalene, out of whom went seven devils,
And Joanna the wife of Chuza Herod’s steward, and Susanna, and many others, which ministered unto him of their substance.
Also, when he sent out his disciples, He never told them to ask for tithes amd offerings nor miracle seeds in every city they entered, He told them to preach the good news of the kingdom, cast out demons, raise the dead, heal the sick, freely you have received, freely you give. Their needs were met not by tithes and seeds… Luke 22:3
- Matthew 10:7-10 KJV
And as ye go, preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand.[
8] Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give.
Provide neither gold, nor silver, nor brass in your purses,
Nor scrip for your journey, neither two coats, neither shoes, nor yet staves: for the workman is worthy of his meat.
The early church was founded on giving (not 10% style) but by believers meeting every other believers’ need. They gave not to provoke blessing but to meet needs of others!
- Acts 2:42-47 KJV
And they continued stedfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers. And fear came upon every soul: and many wonders and signs were done by the apostles. And all that believed were together, and HAD ALL THINGS IN COMMON; AND SOLD THEIR POSSESSIONS and GOODS, and PARTED THEM TO ALL MEN , AS EVERY MAN HAD NEED. And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart, Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.
Paul said my hands have ministered…
- Acts 20 AMPC
YOU YOURSELVES KNOW PERSONALLY that THESE HANDS MINISTERED TO MY OWN NEEDS and THOSE [of the persons] WHO WERE WITH ME.
In everything I have pointed out to you [by example] that, by working diligently in this manner, WE OUGHT TO ASSIST THE WEAK, being mindful of the words of the Lord Jesus, how He Himself said, IT IS MORE BLESSED (makes one happier and more to be envied) TO GIVE THAN TO RECEIVE. .
1 Corinthians 4 AMPC
And we still toil unto weariness [for our living], working hard with our own hands. When men revile us [wound us with an accursed sting], we bless them. When we are persecuted, we take it patiently and endure it.
He also instructed those who steal to steal no more but TO WORK (not sow seeds) so that he can have enough to meet others in need.
- Ephesians 4:28 KJV
Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth.
The earlier you realise that you need to work, have steady income streams, the earlier you would stop looking for where to sow breakthrough-miracle seeds but doing the needful!
Phil. 4:19 Never said “the Lord will supply all your needs according to your tithes and offerings” but His riches in Glory through Christ Jesus! I believe my needs are divinely met and I meet the needs of others (the poor, brethren in Christ, the local church, the gospel) simple!
On the latter, the primary and major assignment we have as believers is the ministry of Reconciliation (2 Corinthians 5:17-21) It’s only common sense to know that you’d spend and be spent for that purpose (with your time, talent and treasure). Giving for that purpose (your local church and/or other 3rd party ministry doing just that) is very necessary ‘cos you’d be causing a party (turn up / owambe) in Heaven anytime a soul is saved and you’d be rewarded for in Heaven. That is If you agree that heaven is a place of reward for believers anyway. Not a reward in itself!
Any form of giving outside of service to God [to meet specific needs (within our outside the church), wilful honouring the Lord with your substance, advancement of the Message of Reconciliation] but to provoke God’s blessing or to “avoid divine curses like a plague” is pure 21st century fraud/scam!!!
God initiates giving Not you! He blesses you primarily to bless others! It’s nothing but a Ponzi Scam (emotional and financial fraud/manipulation) to say “We give so as to receive from God” That’s unlike what a good good Father would do.
God is the first giver! He gave you first so you could meet other’s need! You gave nothing to your responsible earthly father, yet fathered you (you enjoyed every rights and privileges of fatherhood) How much more The Almighty God?
- 1 Timothy 6:17-18 KJV
 Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in THE LIVING GOD, WHO GIVETH US RICHLY ALL THINGS TO ENJOY;
 That they do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to distribute, willing to communicate;
- 2 Corinthians 9 AMPC
And God is able to MAKE ALL GRACE (every favor and earthly blessing) COME TO YOU IN ABUNDANCE, so that you may ALWAYS and UNDER ALL CIRCUMSTANCES and WHATEVER THE NEED BE SELF-SUFFICIENT [possessing enough to require no aid or support and furnished in abundance for every good work and charitable donation].
He has blessed you with ALL THE BLESSINGS you require for LIFE and godliness! discover it (by studying your Bible and walk in it)
- Ephesians 1:3 KJV
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath BLESSED US WITH ALL spiritual BLESSINGS in heavenly places IN CHRIST:
- 2 Peter 1:3-4 KJV
According as his divine power HATH GIVEN UNTO US ALL THINGS THAT PERTAINS UNTO LIFE and godliness, THROUGH THE KNOWLEDGE OF HIM that hath called us to glory and virtue:
Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be PARTAKERS OF THE DIVINE NATURE, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.
Now you don’t tithe before God sends down rain or blessing. He remains a good good father.
- Matthew 5:45 KJV
That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh HIS SUN TO RISE ON THE EVIL AND THE GOOD, and sendeth RAIN ON THE JUST AND THE UNJUST.
- Luke 6:35 KJV
But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest: for HE IS KIND UNTO THE UNTHANKFUL AND TO THE EVIL.
- James 1:17 KJV
Every GOOD GIFT and every PERFECT GIFT is from above, and cometh down from THE FATHER OF LIGHTS, with whom is NO VARIABLENESS, neither SHADOW OF TURNING.
- Romans 8:32 KJV
He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also FREELY GIVE US ALL THINGS?
No conditions are attached to His Blessing and He gives it freely. In fact He demonstrated His love by giving us His very best Gift-even Christ, while we were in our worst state (dead in our trespasses/yet sinners).
If there be any other blessing that you would require tithes, offerings and special seeds to activate, provoke or tap into ehn, It would mean that they are better and/or far greater than Christ himself niyen and it would be a display of doubt in the Integrity of God’s Word especially the Finished Work!
But if you realise the best gift (not exchange) God could ever give to man is Christ! Then you have along with the best, the good and the better also!
Are you saying it’s wrong to give to a minister?
Except if you’re not paying attention, I have answered that already but for clarity sake…
- 1 Corinthians 9:7,9-14 KJV
Who goeth a warfare any time at his own charges? who planteth a vineyard, and eateth not of the fruit thereof? or who feedeth a flock, and eateth not of the milk of the flock?
For it is written in the law of Moses, Thou shalt not muzzle the mouth of the ox that treadeth out the corn. Doth God take care for oxen?
Or saith he it altogether for our sakes? For our sakes, no doubt, this is written: that he that ploweth should plow in hope; and that he that thresheth in hope should be partaker of his hope.
If we have sown unto you spiritual things, is it a great thing if we shall reap your carnal things?
If others be partakers of this power over you, are not we rather? Nevertheless WE HAVE NOT USED THIS POWER; BUT SUFFER ALL THINGS , lest we should HINDER THE GOSPEL OF CHRIST.
Do ye not know that they which minister about holy things live of the things of the temple? and they which wait at the altar are partakers with the altar?
Even so hath the Lord ordained that THEY WHICH PREACH THE GOSPEL SHOULD LIVETH OF THE GOSPEL .
As seen in the Four Gospels when HE sent the 12 and then the 70 or so apostles as stated earlier. Never by Tithing still!
- 1 Timothy 5:17-18 KJV
Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honour, especially they who labour in the word and doctrine. For the scripture saith, Thou shalt not muzzle the ox that treadeth out the corn. And, The labourer is worthy of his reward.
They have to labour o! Haven proven to being dutiful with the Word (not quotable quotes nor motivational, Old wives fables nor enticing words of human Wisdom, High Sounding Nonsense #HSN, Emotional support and Need-based money Gospel)
- Galatians 6:9-10 KJV
And let us not be weary in WELL DOING: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not. As we have therefore opportunity, let us DO GOOD UNTO ALL MEN, especially unto them who are of the HOUSEHOLD OF FAITH.
- Hebrews 6:10 KJV
For God is not unrighteous to forget your WORK AND LABOUR OF LOVE, which ye have shewed toward his name, in that ye have MINISTERED TO THE SAINTS, and do minister.
Thanks for reading thus far my lenghty infotainment post. It’s either been an eye-opener or a study-provoking one for which eitherway it’s worth the time it took me to compile, edit (format) before publishing this post
Next time you hear “Tithing is a Scam!” I want to believe you’d know why and possibly share this post to librate people from the wicked oppression of Malachi 3:10
